Super Mario Carries Nice on Top of Ligue 1

Thanks to the clinical Mario Balotelli, Nice now enjoys a comfortable lead against other title contenders in France’s top tier league.

Known as Super Mario, Balotelli delivered a brace in their highly contested match against Dijon. He converted a penalty on the 32nd minute of the match, after his teammate, Alassane Plea went down to his knees.

But shortly after putting Nice into the driver’s seat, Dijon responded with a penalty on the 37th. Similar to Balo, Julio Tavares was also on target when he took the shot.

With both clubs having their share of the scoring spree, Balo rose to the challenge and brought back the lead to their side when he completed Arnaud Souquet’s pass on the 50th minute.

The said goal was Balotelli’s eighth. He is currently the team’s second top scorer, next to Alassane Plea, who has 10. Aside from performing well in the domestic league, the Italian forward also delivered in the Europa League.

He snatched one of Nice’s goal in their match against FC Krasnodar. Unfortunately, they lost in the said encounter.

Balotelli’s arrival in Nice and his impressive performance came as a (surprise).

The 26-year-old forward became an outcast in his beloved club, AC Milan after failing to meet expectations.

He was transferred to Liverpool as a replacement to Liverpool and a crucial figure in the Brendan Rodgers’ revolution. Yet, after scoring just a single goal, the controversial player returned to Milan for a season-long spell.

He was eventually sold to Nice, where he seemed to find the maturity and the playing minutes to showcase his impeccable skills.

With his most recent goals, Nice is now four points ahead of the Monegasque outfit, AS Monaco. They are also seven points ahead of Ligue’s 1 defending champion, Paris Saint Germain (PSG).

Should Balo continue his scoring streak, there is a high possibility for Nice to not only feature in the domestic league, but also qualify in the Champions League next season.
